This is the foundational text for understanding applied statistical learning and machine learning. It strikes an excellent balance between mathematical rigour and practical application. If you want to understand the "why" behind machine learning algorithms, this is essential reading.

For deeper dives into neural networks and deep learning theory, this is the gold standard. It's comprehensive and technically rigorous — the go-to reference for understanding the mechanics of deep learning models. Best approached after you have foundational knowledge, but invaluable for building true expertise.
